Crafting with a Purpose
Our crafts department is not just about producing beautiful items—it’s about creating opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, and transforming lives. We work closely with over 4,000 artisans spread across seven districts in Western and Central Uganda, including Kabarole, Bunyangabu, Kasese, Kamwenge, Bundibugyo, Mukono, Mpigi, and Kyenjojo. An incredible 94% of these artisans are women who, through their craft, are able to support their families and uplift their communities. Every piece tells a story—a story of resilience, creativity, and empowerment. We take pride in our partnership with the UNHCR Initiative, MADE51, which has allowed us to extend our support to women refugee artisans in the Rwamwanja settlement. These women, despite their challenging circumstances, bring immense skill and dedication to their craft. By providing them with the necessary tools and market access, we help them generate income and regain a sense of independence and dignity.
Commitment to Ethical Trade and Quality
At the heart of our work is a deep commitment to ethical trade and quality craftsmanship. As a verified social enterprise with People and the Planet, and a proud member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO)—the first social enterprise in Uganda to achieve this distinction in 2023—we prioritize the well-being of our producers and the environment over profits. This commitment underpins everything we do, ensuring that our operations are not only sustainable but also just and fair.
Quality is at the core of our operations. Our team has successfully implemented a Quality Management System (QMS) based on ISO 9001:2015 standards, which was verified by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards in August 2023. This ensures that every product we create meets international quality standards, enhancing the marketability and appeal of our crafts both locally and globally.
As Uganda’s largest craft exporter, our dedication to quality is matched by our commitment to fair trade. We ensure that 72% of the retail price of our products goes directly to the artisans, reflecting our belief that the people who create these beautiful items should benefit the most from their work.
Current Projects and Innovations
One of the most exciting projects we’re currently implementing is focused on supporting both refugees and women through handicraft making, in partnership with the Heritage Management Organisation. This initiative not only provides economic opportunities but also helps preserve traditional crafting techniques, ensuring that our cultural heritage is passed down to future generations.
Our crafts department is also constantly exploring new designs, materials, and techniques to keep our products fresh and appealing. We believe that innovation, when combined with tradition, can create something truly special.
Recognition and Impact
Our work has gained national and international recognition, and we’re honored to be featured in the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) impact report. This acknowledgment highlights our contributions to Uganda’s economic performance through diverse and inclusive trade routes. It also validates the hard work of our artisans and enhances our visibility within the global trade and development community.
